Research Support Officer
Term: 8 weeks, Full time (35 hours per week)
1 position available: July – August 2022
This position is funded through the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs Program.
This opportunity is open only to individuals who meet the the eligibility criteria under the program.
To participate, applicants must:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
Please note: International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
Job Specification
Main Responsibilities:
The objective of hiring a youth employee for the Research Support Officer position is to provide that individual with experience of working in an international NGO. The successful candidate will primarily gain experience in developing and implementing Forum Policy Programs, which are concerned with the development and exchange of knowledge on the management, reform, and development of federal and decentralized governance systems and on thematic public policy questions. The Forum’s current Policy Programs portfolio includes programs on climate change and federalism, gender equality, language policy and federalism, and digitalization and federalism, among others. In accordance with organizational requirements, the employee will also work on Development Assistance Programs (DAP), which support federalization, decentralization, and devolution processes in transitioning states.
The major tasks for the Research Support Officer will include:
- Supporting the Policy Programs team in the development and implementation of Policy Program activities (workshops, seminars/webinars, trainings, production of publications, videos and podcasts, etc.)
- Conducting research on a variety of subjects related to federalism and decentralized governance.
- Drafting research memos, reports, and presentations for internal use, as well as project progress reports for donors and other partners.
- Undertaking logistical and organizational tasks to support Policy Program activities.
- Supporting Results-Based Management reporting processes.
- Assisting the program teams in developing and implementing Development Assistance Programs.
- Assisting in any other capacity on Forum projects according to operational requirements.
Qualifications:

- Strong academic and/or professional background in:
- In-depth research, both applied and academic
- Writing for a variety of audiences and purposes
- Analysis and presentation of findings
- Post-secondary students or recent graduates in the fields of Political Science, International Relations, Conflict or Development Studies are strongly urged to apply.
- Individuals with a relevant social sciences degree with a strong research background or comparable professional experience will also be considered.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are considered essential.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is considered essential.
- An advanced education in related fields (graduate studies/certificate training) is considered an asset.
- Bilingual language capacity (English & French) is considered an asset. Additional language skills (e.g. Arabic; Spanish) are also considered beneficial.
